Bereits seit 100 Jahren setzen sich Service Clubs mit den verschiedensten Service-Projekten weltweit für sozialen Frieden und Menschenrechte ein. Heute gibt es unzählige Service Clubs mit unterschiedlichen Entstehungsgeschichten und Denkweisen. Obwohl Service Clubs insbesondere auf der Gemeinde-Ebene durch soziales und ökonomisches Engagement, aber auch über die Nutzung sozialer Netzwerke wichtigen Einfluss ausüben, sind sie bislang, zumindest in Europa, kaum wissenschaftlich untersucht worden. Dieses Defizit versucht Sebastian Gradinger im Rahmen einer Studie auszuräumen. Die Studie stellt vor diesem Hintergrund die historische Entstehung der traditionellen Service Clubs dar und widmet sich der Frage nach der Funktion von Service Clubs für unterschiedliche Ebenen der Gesellschaft wie auch für ihre individuellen Mitglieder. Schließlich wird die Zukunftsperspektive der Clubs in einer gewandelten Gesellschaft diskutiert.

For over one hundred years Service Clubs have been and are avouching for social peace and human rights through their engagement in manifold worldwide service-projects. Today there exist countless Service Clubs with differing origins and customs. Though they are especially influential in their social and economic exercising on municipal level and generally by their use of social networks, Service Clubs appear not to be an item of academic research " at least in Europe it is not. This deficit is now being dispelled by the sociological investigation of Sebastian Gradinger. The study introduces a comprehensive summary of the historical formation of the traditional Service Clubs and is focusing on the question of their social functioning and relevance within different levels of society as well as their individual members. Ultimately the survey concludes by discussing the future role of those Clubs in a changing society.
