T1 - Joseph Heintz the Younger and the ceremonies of the Serenissima - Seventeenth century Venetian festival culture in the works of a German painter N2 - Im Zentrum der Dissertation steht der in Augsburg geborene Maler Joseph Heintz d.J. Jahrhunderts hatten. N2 - This dissertation investigates the live and works of the painter Joseph Heintz the Younger (1600-1678). Born in Augsburg, he moved to Venice in the 1620s, where he lived and worked for more than fifty years. During his long career he became an important and influential artist in the field of Venetian festival painting. The first part of the dissertation focuses on reconstructing the little known biography of the artist, as well as his relationship to patrons and collectors in Venice. In the second part of the dissertation Heintz" Venetian festival paintings are analysed and contextualized. Since the elaborate festival culture was deeply intertwined with the identity of the Republic of Venice, every event was staged with as much splendour as possible. Heintz the Younger depicted official ceremonies of the Republic as well as Carnival spectacles and traditional fighting matches. This dissertation, combining archival research, cultural history, and the analysis of Heintz" paintings, aims to re-evaluate a widely ignored artist of the seventeenth century in Venice. Joseph Heintz the Younger was indeed an important, well connected artist, whose influence on the vedutisti of the eighteenth century should not be underestimated.
