N2 - The dissertation traces the development of the Comedy of Manners, starting with English Restoration Comedies of the 1660ies and leading to Screwball Comedies of Hollywood- "golden era" in the 1930ies and film comedies in the same vein up to the new millenium. It thereby gives a broad outline of the generical evolution of what is here to be called the "Screwball Comedy of Manners", with two prototypical examples (The Awful Truth, 1937 und Bringing up Baby, 1938) illustrating the range of this comic genre on stage and on the silver screen. A panoramic view of commercial Comedies of Manners will reveal numerous close connections across cultural and media boundaries that have been neglected, ignored or outright denied by US-American film-scholars especially. The genre owes its timelessness and lasting attractiveness to its central topic, the battle of the sexes. This playful fight of two well-matched opponents unfolds against the glamorous background of contemporary English or American "high society" respectively, with the mannered life of an upper-class elite serving as a picturesque playground for the eccentric courtship of the "gay (i.e. "happy", "carefree") couple". The antagonism of the two "combatants" turns out to be a symptom and a driving force of their mutual attraction. This is why their "merry war" at long last is never a destructive or malicious one. Only the "gay couple-" rivals - unable to match their wit, flexibility and speed - are laughed at and exposed without mercy. In the course of more than three hundred years, the Comedy of Manners would naturally witness some crucial transformations, which are not, however, to be seen as counterevidence of the genre- historical continuity. On the contrary, all of these can be explained as the direct results of specific political, cultural and aesthetic events and circumstances. Obvious and undisputed differences between Restoration- and Screwball Comedy notwithstanding, the two genres share enough common ground to classify at least a number of the film comedies as "Screwball Comedies of Manners". The genre will keep its fascination for audiences and scholars alike thanks to its capacity for resolving seemingly insoluble socio-cultural conflicts (male vs. female dominance, independence vs. integration). Never sentimental, always witty and psychologically complex, the (Screwball) Comedy of Manners depicts love, marriage, companionship and a shared sense of humour as interdependent components of both personal and social happiness.
