  • Using a three-stage mixed-methods design, this study compares the representation of disability in public-service children's television in Germany and the United Kingdom, taking KiKA (the joint children's channel of ARD and ZDF) and CBeebies (the BBC's children's channel) as case studies. The central research question asks: how is disability audiovisually depicted and constructed in public-service children's television in Germany and the United Kingdom? Grounded theoretically in the sociology of knowledge (Berger & Luckmann, 1969), character theory (Eder, 2014) and stereotype analysis (Barnes, 1992), the study conceptualises media representations as constructive processes that produce societal categories of normality and difference. The research design combines, first, a comparative quantitative analysis of programme structure (144 formats, 182 hours) and visibility, including the character ensemble (186 characters with disabilities); second, a participatory focus group with five experts with disabilities for the reconstructive development of evaluation dimensions and a typology of representation positions; and third, a multimodal sequence analysis of prototypical excerpts to reconstruct the audiovisual production practices through which these representation positions are established. The empirical findings reveal pronounced structural asymmetries between KiKA and CBeebies: CBeebies presents around thirty-six times as many performers and characters with disabilities (181 vs. 5) and allocates around twelve times as much corresponding airtime (16.34 vs. 1.32 hours). Whereas CBeebies anchors disability as a structural programming feature, KiKA follows a practice of selective visibility that, moreover, coincides in the material examined with stereotypical character construction in three of the five characters. On this basis, the study identifies, within a typology, four representation positions within the narrative fabric (subject position, ensemble position, reduction position, sign position) and reconstructs how these are audiovisually established or undermined through editing, camerawork and the shaping of interaction. The findings are related back to the normative frame of reference provided by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which both countries ratified in 2009, leading to the conclusion that inclusive representation is a structural rather than an individual task: it must be anchored in institutional routines and decision-making processes. The study develops an integrated analytical model that systematically relates patterns of visibility, participatory evaluations and media production practices to one another, and derives from this implications for media practice as well as for research in media studies and disability studies.
