Evaluation of an eye tracking setup for studying visual attention in face-to-face conversations

Many eye tracking studies use facial stimuli presented on a display to investigate attentional processing of social stimuli. To introduce a more realistic approach that allows interaction between two real people, we evaluated a new eye tracking setup in three independent studies in terms of data quality, short-term reliability and feasibility. Study 1 measured the robustness, precision and accuracy for calibration stimuli compared to a classical display-based setup. Study 2 used the identical measures with an independent study sample to compare the data quality for a photograph of a face (2D) and the face of the real person (3D). Study 3 evaluated data quality over the course of a real face-to-face conversation and examined the gaze behavior on the facial features of the conversation partner. Study 1 provides evidence that quality indices for the scene-based setup were comparable to those of a classical display-based setup. Average accuracy was better than 0.4° visual angle. Study 2 demonstrates that eye tracking quality is sufficient for 3D stimuli and robust against short interruptions without re-calibration. Study 3 confirms the long-term stability of tracking accuracy during a face-to-face interaction and demonstrates typical gaze patterns for facial features. Thus, the eye tracking setup presented here seems feasible for studying gaze behavior in dyadic face-to-face interactions. Eye tracking data obtained with this setup achieves an accuracy that is sufficient for investigating behavior such as eye contact in social interactions in a range of populations including clinical conditions, such as autism spectrum and social phobia.
Die vorliegende Arbeit zur Gestaltung interaktiver Animationen definiert im theoretischen Teil zunächst zentrale Begriffe der Multimediaforschung und weist anschließend den pauschalen Vergleich verschiedener Codierungsformen wie Texte, Bilder und Animationen aufgrund versuchsplanerischer Mängel zurück. Anstelle dieser Gegenüberstellungen konzentrieren sich Theorien zu Multimedia vornehmlich darauf, wie multimediale Lernumgebungen möglichst lernförderlich zu gestalten sind. Hierbei werden die beiden derzeit dominierenden Theorien, die Cognitive Load Theorie und die kognitive Theorie multimedialen Lernens, eingehend erörtert ebenso wie vier weitere Modelle, die bisher eine nachrangige Bedeutung innerhalb der Multimediaforschung einnehmen. Im empirischen Teil der Arbeit werden zwei Untersuchungsserien mit insgesamt sieben durchgeführten Studien vorgestellt, welche ausgewählte Empfehlungen zur Gestaltung multimedialer Lernumgebungen prüfen. Die erste Experimentalserie befasst sich mit der Frage, ob die Anordnung von Ursache und Wirkung die Lernleistungen für Kausalzusammenhänge in interaktiven Animationen beeinflusst. Es zeigt sich, dass eine links platzierte Ursache und rechts positionierte Wirkung im Vergleich zu anderen Positionierungsmöglichkeiten bei Frauen, nicht jedoch bei Männern, den Lernerfolg erhöht. Signalisierungen, die auf die Anordnung des Kausalzusammenhanges hinweisen fördern dabei die Verständnisleistung der Lernenden. Neben dem Geschlecht moderieren auch Computererfahrung und räumliches Vorstellungsvermögen den Einfluss der Anordnung der Ursache-Wirkungs-Beziehung auf die Lernleistung. Je höher die Computererfahrung, desto besser fallen die Verständnisleistungen bei Einhaltung der Leserichtung von links nach rechts im Vergleich zu anderen Positionierungsmöglichkeiten aus. Probanden mittlerer bis hoher räumlicher Kompetenzen werden in ihrem Lernerfolg besonders von der Anordnung des Kausalzusammenhanges beeinflusst. Die zweite Untersuchungsserie beschäftigt sich mit ausgewählten interaktiven Elementen in Visualisierungen und deren Einfluss auf die Lernleistung von Benutzern. Hier fällt auf, dass viele Lernende sowohl nützliche als auch für den Lernerfolg irrelevante interaktive Elemente überhaupt nicht oder nur sehr selten benutzen. Im Vorfeld der Animation dargebotene Instruktionshinweise, die darum bitten, spezifische interaktive Elemente systematisch zu verwenden, steigern sowohl die Nutzungshäufigkeit dieser Elemente als auch die Verständnisleistungen der Benutzer. Neben der Diskussion um Einschränkungen und praktische Implikationen der gefundenen Ergebnisse wird ein Ausblick auf mögliche zukünftige Forschungsthemen geliefert.
Auf Twitter sind viele Journalisten mit persönlichen Accounts präsent und damit ein potenzieller Interaktionspartner für das Publikum. Untersuchungen aktiver Twitterer zeigen, dass auf der Netzwerkplattform politisch interessierte, persönlichkeitsstarke Nutzer interagieren, die sich vom Durchschnitt typischer Internetnutzer unterscheiden. Nachrichtenjournalisten berichten über negative Erfahrungen im direkten Publikumskontakt auf Twitter. Anders als bei Nutzerkommentaren auf Nachrichtenseiten sind öffentliche Anschriebe und Kontakte zu Journalisten auch unabhängig von einem Beitrag möglich. Zu diesem Phänomen existieren bislang jedoch kaum Studien. Über ein Tracking der Anschriebe wird daher erstens untersucht, wie häufig Politikjournalisten 2017 überhaupt in Tweets erwähnt wurden. Zweitens wurden die Nutzer befragt, die die Journalisten angeschrieben haben. Eine Nutzergruppe aus mehreren zehntausend Accounts nimmt Adressierungen vor. Die Erwähnungen verteilen sich unter den Journalisten ungleich. Die Nutzung von Blogs als alternative Informationsquelle und starke politische Orientierungen erklären das Vorkommen häufiger Interaktionen. Als Hauptmotivationen für Interaktionen zeigen sich das Bedürfnis nach eigener Meinungsäußerung und Kritik sowie das Weitergeben von neuen Informationen und Feedback an Journalisten. Sind diese Motivationen ausgeprägt, tendieren die Nutzer eher zu häufigen Interaktionen.
In light of an alarming increase of sick leave and early retirement because of mental diseases, the public, political and scientific interest in an effective protection of psychological health within organizational context has been increasing for years. More and more the focus is especially on executives who influence the mental health of their employees by leadership behavior within interactions and by designing work tasks and working pro-cesses. In this regard classical and modern, explicit health-oriented leadership approaches provide valuable insights but also neglect the important influence of leadership situation on health-oriented leadership. This situation reduces the explanatory and predictive potential of available health-oriented leadership concepts.
In article 1 a conceptual framework model called Systemic Salutogenic Interaction Model (SSIM) is developed and justified that is based on findings of evidence-based leadership research but also integrates systemic concepts and key elements of the theory of saluto-genesis. The SSIM distinguishes between two levels: Within the primary system of salutogenic interaction salutogenic leadership and employees behavior for the first time are conceptualized as recipocal influence factors that influence each other (level 1). The organizational context is explicitly taken into account as significant factor outside the primary system that effects the behavior of both interaction partners mediated via cognitive pro-cesses (level 2). Due to this focus on interactions und context factors for the first time leadership situation becomes an explicit component of a health-oriented leadership concept.
First of all, article 2 focusses on the systematic analysis of the relative importance health related leadership aspects. For this purpose the TIMP-inventory was developed that records three distinct core-factors of salutogenic leadership (trust, incident management and pressure) which explain more variance of the Work-SoC construct than established general approaches and health-related leadership concepts.
In article 3 the results of a cross-sectional multilevel analysis indicate that the perceived leadership situation significantly explains variance of salutogenic leadership between teams. For the first time, this shows a significant correlation between specific aspects of leadership situation und salutogenic leadership behavior.
Within the frame of a quasi-experimental study (article 4), for the first time, a correlation is shown between salutogenic target-setting processes on executive’s side and the Work-SoC of team members. These results support an essential effect mechanism that is postulated in the SSIM. Furthermore these findings indicate that the SSIM can profitably be used within the context of salutogenic coachings, underlining its practical benefit.
Taken together the empirical findings of this dissertation support the assumption that the new SSIM approach significantly expands the explanatory und predictive potential of the health-oriented leadership concepts so far available. The results also raise a number of new, interesting questions for future research. Furthermore the SSIM broadens the perspective regarding the strategic orientation of human resource and organizational devel-opment. Especially out of the SSIM important guiding principles and innovative concepts for a target-oriented diagnostic und effective interventions can be derived. Thus this dissertation lays the foundation for a coherent, holistic oriented salutogenic leadership research und practice.
Acute social and physical stress interact to influence social behavior: the role of social anxiety

Stress is proven to have detrimental effects on physical and mental health. Due to different tasks and study designs, the direct consequences of acute stress have been found to be wide-reaching: while some studies report prosocial effects, others report increases in antisocial behavior, still others report no effect. To control for specific effects of different stressors and to consider the role of social anxiety in stress-related social behavior, we investigated the effects of social versus physical stress on behavior in male participants possessing different levels of social anxiety. In a randomized, controlled two by two design we investigated the impact of social and physical stress on behavior in healthy young men. We found significant influences on various subjective increases in stress by physical and social stress, but no interaction effect. Cortisol was significantly increased by physical stress, and the heart rate was modulated by physical and social stress as well as their combination. Social anxiety modulated the subjective stress response but not the cortisol or heart rate response. With respect to behavior, our results show that social and physical stress interacted to modulate trust, trustworthiness, and sharing. While social stress and physical stress alone reduced prosocial behavior, a combination of the two stressor modalities could restore prosociality. Social stress alone reduced nonsocial risk behavior regardless of physical stress. Social anxiety was associated with higher subjective stress responses and higher levels of trust. As a consequence, future studies will need to investigate further various stressors and clarify their effects on social behavior in health and social anxiety disorders.
The dissertation includes three published articles on which the development of a theoretical model of motivational and self-regulatory determinants of the intention to comprehensively search for health information is based. The first article focuses on building a solid theoretical foundation as to the nature of a comprehensive search for health information and enabling its integration into a broader conceptual framework. Based on subjective source perceptions, a taxonomy of health information sources was developed. The aim of this taxonomy was to identify most fundamental source characteristics to provide a point of reference when it comes to relating to the target objects of a comprehensive search. Three basic source characteristics were identified: expertise, interaction and accessibility. The second article reports on the development and evaluation of an instrument measuring the goals individuals have when seeking health information: the ‘Goals Associated with Health Information Seeking’ (GAINS) questionnaire. Two goal categories (coping focus and regulatory focus) were theoretically derived, based on which four goals (understanding, action planning, hope and reassurance) were classified. The final version of the questionnaire comprised four scales representing the goals, with four items per scale (sixteen items in total). The psychometric properties of the GAINS were analyzed in three independent samples, and the questionnaire was found to be reliable and sufficiently valid as well as suitable for a patient sample. It was concluded that the GAINS makes it possible to evaluate goals of health information seeking (HIS) which are likely to inform the intention building on how to organize the search for health information. The third article describes the final development and a first empirical evaluation of a model of motivational and self-regulatory determinants of an intentionally comprehensive search for health information. Based on the insights and implications of the previous two articles and an additional rigorous theoretical investigation, the model included approach and avoidance motivation, emotion regulation, HIS self-efficacy, problem and emotion focused coping goals and the intention to seek comprehensively (as outcome variable). The model was analyzed via structural equation modeling in a sample of university students. Model fit was good and hypotheses with regard to specific direct and indirect effects were confirmed. Last, the findings of all three articles are synthesized, the final model is presented and discussed with regard to its strengths and weaknesses, and implications for further research are determined.
