This dissertation looked at both design-based and model-based estimation for rare and clustered populations using the idea of the ACS design. The ACS design (Thompson, 2012, p. 319) starts with an initial sample that is selected by a probability sampling method. If any of the selected units meets a pre-specified condition, its neighboring units are added to the sample and observed. If any of the added units meets the pre-specified condition, its neighboring units are further added to the sample and observed. The procedure continues until there are no more units that meet the pre-specified condition. In this dissertation, the pre-specified condition is the detection of at least one animal in a selected unit. In the design-based estimation, three estimators were proposed under three specific design setting. The first design was stratified strip ACS design that is suitable for aerial or ship surveys. This was a case study in estimating population totals of African elephants. In this case, units/quadrant were observed only once during an aerial survey. The Des Raj estimator (Raj, 1956) was modified to obtain an unbiased estimate of the population total. The design was evaluated using simulated data with different levels of rarity and clusteredness. The design was also evaluated on real data of African elephants that was obtained from an aerial census conducted in parts of Kenya and Tanzania in October (dry season) 2013. In this study, the order in which the samples were observed was maintained. Re-ordering the samples by making use of the Murthy's estimator (Murthy, 1957) can produce more efficient estimates. Hence a possible extension of this study. The computation cost resulting from the n! permutations in the Murthy's estimator however, needs to be put into consideration. The second setting was when there exists an auxiliary variable that is negatively correlated with the study variable. The Murthy's estimator (Murthy, 1964) was modified. Situations when the modified estimator is preferable was given both in theory and simulations using simulated and two real data sets. The study variable for the real data sets was the distribution and counts of oryx and wildbeest. This was obtained from an aerial census that was conducted in parts of Kenya and Tanzania in October (dry season) 2013. Temperature was the auxiliary variable for two study variables. Temperature data was obtained from R package raster. The modified estimator provided more efficient estimates with lower bias compared to the original Murthy's estimator (Murthy, 1964). The modified estimator was also more efficient compared to the modified HH and the modified HT estimators of (Thompson, 2012, p. 319). In this study, one auxiliary variable is considered. A fruitful area for future research would be to incorporate multi-auxiliary information at the estimation phase of an ACS design. This could, in principle, be done by using for instance a multivariate extension of the product estimator (Singh, 1967) or by using the generalized regression estimator (Särndal et al., 1992). The third case under design-based estimation, studied the conjoint use of the stopping rule (Gattone and Di Battista, 2011) and the use of the without replacement of clusters (Dryver and Thompson, 2007). Each of these two methods was proposed to reduce the sampling cost though the use of the stopping rule results in biased estimates. Despite this bias, the new estimator resulted in higher efficiency gain in comparison to the without replacement of cluster design. It was also more efficient compared to the stratified design which is known to reduce final sample size when networks are truncated at stratum boundaries. The above evaluation was based on simulated and real data. The real data was the distribution and counts of hartebeest, elephants and oryx obtained in the same census as above. The bias attributed by the stopping rule has not been evaluated analytically. This may not be direct since the truncated network formed depends on the initial unit sampled (Gattone et al., 2016a). This and the order of the bias however, deserves further investigation as it may help in understanding the effect of the increase in the initial sample size together with the population characteristics on the efficiency of the proposed estimator. Chapter four modeled data that was obtained using the stratified strip ACS (as described in sub-section (3.1)). This was an extension of the model of Rapley and Welsh (2008) by modeling data that was obtained from a different design, the introduction of an auxiliary variable and the use of the without replacement of clusters mechanism. Ideally, model-based estimation does not depend on the design or rather how the sample was obtained. This is however, not the case if the design is informative; such as the ACS design. In this case, the procedure that was used to obtain the sample was incorporated in the model. Both model-based and design-based simulations were conducted using artificial and real data. The study and the auxiliary variable for the real data was the distribution and counts of elephants collected during an aerial census in parts of Kenya and Tanzania in October (dry season) and April (wet season) 2013 respectively. Areas of possible future research include predicting the population total of African elephants in all parks in Kenya. This can be achieved in an economical and reliable way by using the theory of SAE. Chapter five compared the different proposed strategies using the elephant data. Again the study variable was the elephant data from October (dry season) 2013 and the auxiliary variable was the elephant data from April (wet season) 2013. The results show that the choice of particular strategy to use depends on the characteristic of the population under study and the level and the direction of the correlation between the study and the auxiliary variable (if present). One general area of the ACS design that is still behind, is the implementation of the design in the field especially on animal populations. This is partly attributed by the challenges associated with the field implementation, some of which were discussed in section 2.3. Green et al. (2010) however, provides new insights in undertaking the ACS design during an aerial survey such as how the aircraft should turn while surveying neighboring units. A key point throughout the dissertation is the reduction of cost during a survey which can be seen by the reduction in the number of units in the final sample (through the use of stopping rule, use of stratification and truncating networks at stratum boundaries) and ensuring that units are observed only once (by using the without replacement of cluster sampling technique). The cost of surveying an edge unit(s) is assumed to be low in which case the efficiency of the ACS design relative to the non-adaptive design is achieved (Thompson and Collins, 2002). This is however not the case in aerial surveys as the aircraft flies at constant speed and height (Norton-Griffiths, 1978). Hence the cost of surveying an edge unit is the same as the cost of surveying a unit that meets the condition of interest. The without replacement of cluster technique plays a greater role of reducing the cost of sampling in such surveys. Other key points that motivated the sections in the dissertation include gains in efficiency (in all sections) and practicability of the designs in the specific setting. Even though the dissertation focused on animal populations, the methods can as well be implemented in any population that is rare and clustered such as in the study of forestry, plants, pollution, minerals and so on.
Jahrhunderts.
By rodent studies it has been shown that the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is a candidate gene for the investigation of cognitive functions comparable to human executive function. The present work addresses the question if polymorphisms in the MR gene can act as a "probe" to explain a part of the interindividual variance of human executive functions. For this purpose, 72 healthy young participants were assigned to four equally sized groups, concerning their particular MR genotype for two common MR polymorphisms. They were investigated in an electroencephalogram (EEG) test session, accomplishing two cognitive tests while delivering saliva samples for subsequent cortisol measures. The two tests chosen for the assessment of executive functions were the Attention Network Task (ANT) and a modified version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST).Chapter 1 of the present work reports of the rational bases for the empirical approach, which were built up on a broad theoretical background presented in Chapter 2. In the third chapter, the investigation and results of the statistical analysis for behavioral data (i.e. reaction times, accuracy/error rates) are presented. No association with MR polymorphisms was found for the reaction times of both tests. For the accuracy rate, differences between genotype groups were found for ANT and WCST, indicating an association of MR polymorphisms and accuracy in the Alertness and Executive Control network of the ANT and during the detection of an intradimensional shift in the WCST. Data acquisition and the results for EEG data analyses are presented in Chapter 4. The results show that groups differing for MR genotype show different activity over prefrontal motor areas during the process of answering to the ANT. Those group differences again were prominent for the Alertness and Executive Control network. A tendency for further significant group differences was found for activity on frontopolar positions in extradimensional rule switching. Chapter 5 summarizes the findings for the analysis of salivary free cortisol, showing a tendency for an association between MR polymorphisms and a mildly stimulated Hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis during the test situation. The results of the different measures are integrated and discussed in Chapter 6 within the scope of novel findings in investigating the functionality of the chosen MR polymorphisms. Finally, Chapter 7 gives an outlook on the methodology and constraints of future research strategies to further describe the role of the MR in human cognitive function.
While humans find it easy to process visual information from the real world, machines struggle with this task due to the unstructured and complex nature of the information. Computer vision (CV) is the approach of artificial intelligence that attempts to automatically analyze, interpret, and extract such information. Recent CV approaches mainly use deep learning (DL) due to its very high accuracy. DL extracts useful features from unstructured images in a training dataset to use them for specific real-world tasks. However, DL requires a large number of parameters, computational power, and meaningful training data, which can be noisy, sparse, and incomplete for specific domains. Furthermore, DL tends to learn correlations from the training data that do not occur in reality, making DNNs poorly generalizable and error-prone.
Therefore, the field of visual transfer learning is seeking methods that are less dependent on training data and are thus more applicable in the constantly changing world. One idea is to enrich DL with prior knowledge. Knowledge graphs (KG) serve as a powerful tool for this purpose because they can formalize and organize prior knowledge based on an underlying ontological schema. They contain symbolic operations such as logic, rules, and reasoning, and can be created, adapted, and interpreted by domain experts. Due to the abstraction potential of symbols, KGs provide good prerequisites for generalizing their knowledge. To take advantage of the generalization properties of KG and the ability of DL to learn from large-scale unstructured data, attempts have long been made to combine explicit graph and implicit vector representations. However, with the recent development of knowledge graph embedding methods, where a graph is transferred into a vector space, new perspectives for a combination in vector space are opening up.
In this work, we attempt to combine prior knowledge from a KG with DL to improve visual transfer learning using the following steps: First, we explore the potential benefits of using prior knowledge encoded in a KG for DL-based visual transfer learning. Second, we investigate approaches that already combine KG and DL and create a categorization based on their general idea of knowledge integration. Third, we propose a novel method for the specific category of using the knowledge graph as a trainer, where a DNN is trained to adapt to a representation given by prior knowledge of a KG. Fourth, we extend the proposed method by extracting relevant context in the form of a subgraph of the KG to investigate the relationship between prior knowledge and performance on a specific CV task. In summary, this work provides deep insights into the combination of KG and DL, with the goal of making DL approaches more generalizable, more efficient, and more interpretable through prior knowledge.
This thesis is concerned with two classes of optimization problems which stem
mainly from statistics: clustering problems and cardinality-constrained optimization problems. We are particularly interested in the development of computational techniques to exactly or heuristically solve instances of these two classes
of optimization problems.
The minimum sum-of-squares clustering (MSSC) problem is widely used
to find clusters within a set of data points. The problem is also known as
the $k$-means problem, since the most prominent heuristic to compute a feasible
point of this optimization problem is the $k$-means method. In many modern
applications, however, the clustering suffers from uncertain input data due to,
e.g., unstructured measurement errors. The reason for this is that the clustering
result then represents a clustering of the erroneous measurements instead of
retrieving the true underlying clustering structure. We address this issue by
applying robust optimization techniques: we derive the strictly and $\Gamma$-robust
counterparts of the MSSC problem, which are as challenging to solve as the
original model. Moreover, we develop alternating direction methods to quickly
compute feasible points of good quality. Our experiments reveal that the more
conservative strictly robust model consistently provides better clustering solutions
than the nominal and the less conservative $\Gamma$-robust models.
In the context of clustering problems, however, using only a heuristic solution
comes with severe disadvantages regarding the interpretation of the clustering.
This motivates us to study globally optimal algorithms for the MSSC problem.
We note that although some algorithms have already been proposed for this
problem, it is still far from being “practically solved”. Therefore, we propose
mixed-integer programming techniques, which are mainly based on geometric
ideas and which can be incorporated in a
branch-and-cut based algorithm tailored
to the MSSC problem. Our numerical experiments show that these techniques
significantly improve the solution process of a
state-of-the-art MINLP solver
when applied to the problem.
We then turn to the study of cardinality-constrained optimization problems.
We consider two famous problem instances of this class: sparse portfolio optimization and sparse regression problems. In many modern applications, it is common
to consider problems with thousands of variables. Therefore, globally optimal
algorithms are not always computationally viable and the study of sophisticated
heuristics is very desirable. Since these problems have a discrete-continuous
structure, decomposition methods are particularly well suited. We then apply a
penalty alternating direction method that explores this structure and provides
very good feasible points in a reasonable amount of time. Our computational
study shows that our methods are competitive to
state-of-the-art solvers and heuristics.
Financing of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Europe - Financing Patterns and 'Crowdfunding'
(2015)
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role for the innovativeness, economic growth and competitiveness of Europe. One of the most pressing problems of SMEs is access to finance to ensure their survival and growth. This dissertation uses both quantitative and qualitative exploratory research methods and increases with its holistic approach the transparency in SME financing. The results of a cluster analysis including 12,726 SMEs in 28 European countries reveal that SME financing in Europe is not homogenous but that different financing patterns exist which differ according to the number of financing instruments used and the combinations thereof. Furthermore, the SME financing types can be profiled according to their firm-, product-, industry- and country-specific characteristics. The results of this analysis provide some support for prior findings that smaller, younger and innovative SMEs suffer from a financing gap which cannot be closed with traditional financing instruments. One alternative to close this financing gap is crowdfunding. Even though crowdfunding has shown tremendous growth rates over the past few years, little is known about the determinants of this financing alternative. This dissertation systematically analyses the existing scientific literature on crowdfunding as an alternative in SME financing and reveals existing research gaps. Afterwards, the focus is on the role of investor communication as a way to reduce information asymmetries of the crowd in equity-based crowdfunding. The results of 24 interviews with market participants in equity-based crowdfunding reveal that crowd investors seem to replace personal contacts with alternative ways of communicating, which can be characterized as pseudo-personal (i.e., by using presentation videos, social media and investor relations channels). In addition, it was found that third party endorsements (e.g., other crowd investors, professional investors, customers and platforms) reduce the information asymmetries of crowd investors and hence, increase the likelihood of their investment.

This dissertation investigates corporate acquisition decisions that represent important corporate development activities for family and non-family firms. The main research objective of this dissertation is to generate insights into the subjective decision-making behavior of corporate decision-makers from family and non-family firms and their weighting of M&A decision-criteria during the early pre-acquisition target screening and selection process. The main methodology chosen for the investigation of M&A decision-making preferences and the weighting of M&A decision criteria is a choice-based conjoint analysis. The overall sample of this dissertation consists of 304 decision-makers from 264 private and public family and non-family firms from mainly Germany and the DACH-region. In the first empirical part of the dissertation, the relative importance of strategic, organizational and financial M&A decision-criteria for corporate acquirers in acquisition target screening is investigated. In addition, the author uses a cluster analysis to explore whether distinct decision-making patterns exist in acquisition target screening. In the second empirical part, the dissertation explores whether there are differences in investment preferences in acquisition target screening between family and non-family firms and within the group of family firms. With regards to the heterogeneity of family firms, the dissertation generated insights into how family-firm specific characteristics like family management, the generational stage of the firm and non-economic goals such as transgenerational control intention influences the weighting of different M&A decision criteria in acquisition target screening. The dissertation contributes to strategic management research, in specific to M&A literature, and to family business research. The results of this dissertation generate insights into the weighting of M&A decision-making criteria and facilitate a better understanding of corporate M&A decisions in family and non-family firms. The findings show that decision-making preferences (hence the weighting of M&A decision criteria) are influenced by characteristics of the individual decision-maker, the firm and the environment in which the firm operates.
Despite significant advances in terms of the adoption of formal Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection, enforcement of and compliance with IPR regulations remains a contested issue in one of the world's major contemporary economies—China. The present review seeks to offer insights into possible reasons for this discrepancy as well as possible paths of future development by reviewing prior literature on IPR in China. Specifically, it focuses on the public's perspective, which is a crucial determinant of the effectiveness of any IPR regime. It uncovers possible differences with public perspectives in other countries and points to mechanisms (e.g., political, economic, cultural, and institutional) that may foster transitions over time in both formal IPR regulation and in the public perception of and compliance with IPR in China. On this basis, the review advances suggestions for future research in order to improve scholars' understanding of the public's perspective of IPR in China, its antecedents and implications.
Human behavior in regard to financial issues has long been explained in the light of the efficient market hypothesis. Following the strict interpretation of this theory, investors in the financial markets take into account that all relevant information is already included in the market price of an asset. Accordingly, information from the past does not affect future prices as all information is instantly incorporated. However, focussing on the actual behavior of humans, our empirical results indicate that the existing market conditions influence the behavior of stock market investors.
In the introductory chapter, we describe the difficulties of the efficient markets hypothesis in explaining the behavior of investors within a strictly rational frame. In the second chapter, we show that investors do consider the previous market development for their upcoming investment decisions. First, stock market patterns with predominantly positive days trigger significantly more trades than patterns with negative days. And second, after recent upward movements, investors sell proportionally more stocks than they buy. In the third chapter, we expound a theoretical framework that connects investment-related triggers of arousal, such as the performance of own stocks and the general market environment, with investors’ risk appetite in the decision-making processes. Our model predicts that aroused investors accept higher risks by holding stocks longer in comparison to their less aroused peers. In the fourth chapter, we show how two extreme market environments, the bull and the bear market, affect the disposition effect and especially learning to avoid this behavioral bias. Investors are subject to the bias in each market phase but with a far stronger propensity during the bear market. However, we show that investors also make the greatest progress in avoiding the disposition effect during this period.
These results suggest that future studies about investors’ behavior in the financial markets should consider the market environment as an important determinant.
The process of land degradation needs to be understood at various spatial and temporal scales in order to protect ecosystem services and communities directly dependent on it. This is especially true for regions in sub-Saharan Africa, where socio economic and political factors exacerbate ecological degradation. This study identifies spatially explicit land change dynamics in the Copperbelt province of Zambia in a local context using satellite vegetation index time series derived from the MODIS sensor. Three sets of parameters, namely, monthly series, annual peaking magnitude, and annual mean growing season were developed for the period 2000 to 2019. Trend was estimated by applying harmonic regression on monthly series and linear least square regression on annually aggregated series. Estimated spatial trends were further used as a basis to map endemic land change processes. Our observations were as follows: (a) 15% of the study area dominant in the east showed positive trends, (b) 3% of the study area dominant in the west showed negative trends, (c) natural regeneration in mosaic landscapes (post shifting cultivation) and land management in forest reserves were chiefly responsible for positive trends, and (d) degradation over intact miombo woodland and cultivation areas contributed to negative trends. Additionally, lower productivity over areas with semi-permanent agriculture and shift of new encroachment into woodlands from east to west of Copperbelt was observed. Pivot agriculture was not a main driver in land change. Although overall greening trends prevailed across the study site, the risk of intact woodlands being exposed to various disturbances remains high. The outcome of this study can provide insights about natural and assisted landscape restoration specifically addressing the miombo ecoregion.
On the Influence of Ignored Stimuli: Generalization and Application of Distractor-Response Binding.
(2011)
In selection tasks where target stimuli are accompanied by distractors, responses to target stimuli, target stimuli and the distractor stimuli can be encoded together as one episode in memory. Subsequent repetition of any aspect of such an episode can lead to the retrieval of the whole episode including the response. Thus, repeating a distractor can retrieve responses given to previous targets; this mechanism was labeled distractor-response binding and has been evidenced in several visual setups. Three experiments of the present thesis implemented a priming paradigm with an identification task to generalize this mechanism to auditory and tactile stimuli as well as to stimulus concepts. In four more experiments the possible effect of distractor-response binding on drivers' reactions was investigated. The same paradigm was implemented using more complex stimuli, foot responses, go/no-go responses, and a dual task setup with head-up and head-down displays. The results indicate that distractor-response binding effects occur with auditory and tactile stimuli and that the process is mediated by a conceptual representation of the distractor stimuli. Distractor-response binding effects also revealed for stimuli, responses, and framework conditions likely to occur in a driving situation. It can be concluded that the effect of distractor-response binding needs to be taken into account for the design of local danger warnings in driver assistance systems.
In this thesis, we present a new approach for estimating the effects of wind turbines for a local bat population. We build an individual based model (IBM) which simulates the movement behaviour of every single bat of the population with its own preferences, foraging behaviour and other species characteristics. This behaviour is normalized by a Monte-Carlo simulation which gives us the average behaviour of the population. The result is an occurrence map of the considered habitat which tells us how often the bat and therefore the considered bat population frequent every region of this habitat. Hence, it is possible to estimate the crossing rate of the position of an existing or potential wind turbine. We compare this individual based approach with a partial differential equation based method. This second approach produces a lower computational effort but, unfortunately, we lose information about the movement trajectories at the same time. Additionally, the PDE based model only gives us a density profile. Hence, we lose the information how often each bat crosses special points in the habitat in one night. In a next step we predict the average number of fatalities for each wind turbine in the habitat, depending on the type of the wind turbine and the behaviour of the considered bat species. This gives us the extra mortality caused by the wind turbines for the local population. This value is used for a population model and finally we can calculate whether the population still grows or if there already is a decline in population size which leads to the extinction of the population. Using the combination of all these models, we are able to evaluate the conflict of wind turbines and bats and to predict the result of this conflict. Furthermore, it is possible to find better positions for wind turbines such that the local bat population has a better chance to survive. Since bats tend to move in swarm formations under certain circumstances, we introduce swarm simulation using partial integro-differential equations. Thereby, we have a closer look at existence and uniqueness properties of solutions.

This study scrutinizes press photographs published during the first 6 weeks of the Russian War in Ukraine, beginning February 24th, 2022. Its objective is to shed light on the emotions evoked in Internet-savvy audiences. This empirical research aims to contribute to the understanding of emotional media effects that shape attitudes and actions of ordinary citizens. Main research questions are: What kind of empathic reactions are observed during the Q-sort study? Which visual patterns are relevant for which emotional evaluations and attributions? The assumption is that the evaluations and attributions of empathy are not random, but follow specific patterns. The empathic reactions are based on visual patterns which, in turn, influence the type of empathic reaction. The identification of specific categories for visual and emotional reaction patterns are arrived at in different methodological processes. Visual pattern categories were developed inductively, using the art history method of iconography-iconology to identify six distinct types of visual motifs in a final sample of 33 war photographs. The overarching categories for empathic reactions—empty empathy, vicarious traumatization and witnessing—were applied deductively, building on E. Ann Kaplan's pivotal distinctions. The main result of this research are three novel categories that combine visual patterns with empathic reaction patterns. The labels for these categories are a direct result of the Q-factorial analysis, interpreted through the lense of iconography-iconology. An exploratory nine-scale forced-choice Q-sort study (Nstimuli = 33) was implemented, followed by self-report interviews with a total of 25 participants [F = 16 (64%), M = 9 (36%), Mage = 26.4 years]. Results from this exploratory research include motivational statements on the meanings of war photography from semi-structured post-sort-interviews. The major result of this study are three types of visual patterns (“factors”) that govern distinct empathic reactions in participants: Factor 1 is “veiled empathy” with highest empathy being attributed to photos showing victims whose corpses or faces were veiled. Additional features of “veiled empathy” are a strong anti-politician bias and a heightened awareness of potential visual manipulation. Factor 2 is “mirrored empathy” with highest empathy attributions to photos displaying human suffering openly. Factor 3 focused on the context. It showed a proclivity for documentary style photography. This pattern ranked photos without clear contextualization lower in empathy than those photos displaying the fully contextualized setting. To the best of our knowledge, no study has tested empathic reactions to war photography empirically. In this respect, the study is novel, but also exploratory. Findings like the three patterns of visual empathy might be helpful for photo selection processes in journalism, for political decision-making, for the promotion of relief efforts, and for coping strategies in civil society to deal with the potentially numbing or traumatizing visual legacy of the War in Ukraine.

This doctoral dissertation examines two authors of German descent who are representatives for the development of Canadian literature and its regional focus on the prairies: Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948) and Robert Kroetsch (*1927). Kroetsch, in his essays and talks, has repeatedly referred to Grove as one of his "literary ancestors". Although there exist monographs and numerous articles on both authors, the present study is the first-ever comparative approach. This study's main access is provided by the motif of disguise and masquerade, which plays a central role in the authors' works. Even if critics have looked at the traditional motif (cf. Homer's Odyssey, or many Renaissance plays) in Kroetsch's writing sporadically, and have used it to examine Grove's biography, no approach has attempted a larger contextualization within/among both writers' oeuvres. According to Lloyd Davis, however, the motif can be seen as "representing the cultural dialogism, rather than any particular thesis, of selfhood" (Davis 16). Hence, it helps interrogate a topic that within Canada - the former colony and current multicultural immigrant society - had and has a specific relevance. As an analytical tool, the motif allows for highlighting both the similarities and the differences between the œuvres of Grove and Kroetsch as key-figures of a (post)colonial literature of Western Canada on the one hand, and for general questions pertaining to the characterisation of figures, the definition of narrative positions and even of genres on the other hand. Following the preface, two theoretical chapters outline conceptions of identity and their deducible forms and functions of disguise and masquerade, including a discussion of John Richardson's Wacousta (1832), which is the first Canadian example for the motif's constitutive use. The second major section sketches, in two separate chapters, the poetics and mentalities (Mentalitätsgeschichte) of each writer within the context of their complete works by looking at biographical data as well as the critics' assessments. After immigrating into Manitoba in 1912, Grove soon became the first representative of a literary prairie-realism. Before, he had faked his suicide in 1909 and stripped off his 'original' identity as the German translator (e.g., Wilde, Wells, Flaubert) as well as modestly successful poet and novelist Felix Paul Greve to leave behind debts and a notorious lover and to reinvent himself in the New World. The protean role-plays of 'FPG' - decoded only 23 years after his death - are manifested in his creation of literary characters, in a "collectivity of identities" (Cavell 12) or number of metonymic personae that keep his critics busy to this date. Providing a different story, Kroetsch's family of German background immigrated into Canada in the mid-19th-century. Kroetsch has been thematizing his native province, Alberta, just as much as general national dispositions or questings in the course of his literary career spanning five decades now. His progressive and experimental writing has earned him, for instance, the label of "Mr Canadian Postmodern" by Linda Hutcheon (Canadian Postmodern 183). Particularly important among his specifically postmodern instruments is the principle of archaeology as derived from Foucault and employed as both metaphor and method; further methodological tools are Barthes' theories on reading/writing as an erotic act, Bakhtin's notion of (the) carnival(ization of literature) and a great sensibility for the myths as well as oral traditions of the North American Natives. If the third section analyzes two of FPG's novels to illustrate his transfer, or literal translation, from a German to a Canadian cultural context, the fourth section represents this study's core with three one-to-one comparisons of the two writers' central prose texts. In spite of all affinities between both authors, however, this section already indicates what section five further underlines: Kroetsch clearly transcends Grove's achievements (which ultimately reduce all his characters and texts to nothing but his own will- and wishful projections and identity-configurations); on the level of narrativity, genre and gender, Kroetsch not only goes far beyond parodying Grove, but proves to be an innovator whose mis-en-scène of the motif of disguise provides both more psychological depth and relevance for socio-historical contexts. This comparative study has been informed by research in the Special Archives and Collections at the University of Manitoba (Grove Papers) and at the University of Calgary (Kroetsch Papers), by related talks at Lund, Belfast and Winnipeg as well as by an occasional quotation from an interview I conducted with Robert Kroetsch as early as 1996.
The harmonic Faber operator
(2018)
P. K. Suetin points out in the beginning of his monograph "Faber Polynomials and Faber Series" that Faber polynomials play an important role in modern approximation theory of a complex variable as they are used in representing analytic functions in simply connected domains, and many theorems on approximation of analytic functions are proved with their help [50]. In 1903, the Faber polynomials were firstly discovered by G. Faber. It was Faber's aim to find a generalisation of Taylor series of holomorphic functions in the open unit disc D in the following way. As any holomorphic function in D has a Taylor series representation f(z)=\sum_{\nu=0}^{\infty}a_{\nu}z^{\nu} (z\in\D) converging locally uniformly inside D, for a simply connected domain G, Faber wanted to determine a system of polynomials (Q_n) such that each function f being holomorphic in G can be expanded into a series
f=\sum_{\nu=0}^{\infty}b_{\nu}Q_{\nu} converging locally uniformly inside G. Having this goal in mind, Faber considered simply connected domains bounded by an analytic Jordan curve. He constructed a system of polynomials (F_n) with this property. These polynomials F_n were named after him as Faber polynomials. In the preface of [50], a detailed summary of results concerning Faber polynomials and results obtained by the aid of them is given. An important application of Faber polynomials is e.g. the transfer of known assertions concerning polynomial approximation of functions belonging to the disc algebra to results of the approximation of functions being continuous on a compact continuum K which contains at least two points and has a connected complement and being holomorphic in the interior of K. In this field, the Faber operator denoted by T turns out to be a powerful tool (for an introduction, see e.g. D. Gaier's monograph). It
assigns a polynomial of degree at most n given in the monomial basis \sum_{\nu=0}^{n}a_{\nu}z^{\nu} with a polynomial of degree at most n given in the basis of Faber polynomials \sum_{\nu=0}^{n}a_{\nu}F_{\nu}. If the Faber operator is continuous with respect to the uniform norms, it has a unique continuous extension to an operator mapping the disc algebra onto the space of functions being continuous on the whole compact continuum and holomorphic in its interior. For all f being element of the disc algebra and all polynomials P, via the obvious estimate for the uniform norms ||T(f)-T(P)||<= ||T|| ||f-P||, it can be seen that the original task of approximating F=T(f) by polynomials is reduced to the polynomial approximation of the function f. Therefore, the question arises under which conditions the Faber operator is continuous and surjective. A fundamental result in this regard was established by J. M. Anderson and J. Clunie who showed that if the compact continuum is bounded by a rectifiable Jordan curve with bounded boundary rotation and free from cusps, then the Faber operator with respect to the uniform norms is a topological isomorphism. Now, let f be a harmonic function in D. Similar as above, we find that f has a uniquely determined representation f=\sum_{\nu=-\infty}^{\infty}a_{\nu}p_{\nu}
converging locally uniformly inside D where p_{n}(z)=z^{n} for n\in\N_{0} and p_{-n}(z)=\overline{z}^{n} for n\in\N}. One may ask whether there is an analogue for harmonic functions on simply connected domains G. Indeed, for a domain G bounded by an analytic Jordan curve, the conjecture that each function f being harmonic in G has a uniquely determined representation f=\sum_{\nu= \infty}^{\infty}b_{\nu}F_{\nu} where F_{-n}(z)=\overline{F_{n}(z\)} for n\inN, converging locally uniformly inside G, holds true. Let now K be a compact continuum containing at least two points and having a connected complement. A main component of this thesis will be the examination of the harmonic Faber operator mapping a harmonic polynomial given in the basis of the harmonic monomials \sum_{\nu=-n}^{n}a_{\nu}p_{\nu} to a harmonic polynomial given as \sum_{\nu=-n}^{n}a_{\nu}F_{\nu}.
If this operator, which is based on an idea of J. Müller, is continuous with respect to the uniform norms, it has a unique continuous extension to an operator mapping the functions being continuous on \partial\D onto the continuous functions on K being
harmonic in the interior of K. Harmonic Faber polynomials and the harmonic Faber operator will be the objects accompanying us throughout
our whole discussion. After having given an overview about notations and certain tools we will use in our consideration in the first chapter, we begin our studies with an introduction to the Faber operator and the harmonic Faber operator. We start modestly and consider domains bounded by an analytic Jordan curve. In Section 2, as a first result, we will show that, for such a domain G, the harmonic Faber operator has a unique continuous extension to an operator mapping the space of the harmonic functions in D onto the space
of the harmonic functions in G, and moreover, the harmonic Faber
operator is an isomorphism with respect to the topologies of locally
uniform convergence. In the further sections of this chapter, we illumine the behaviour of the (harmonic) Faber operator on certain function spaces. In the third chapter, we leave the situation of compact continua bounded by an analytic Jordan curve. Instead we consider closures of domains bounded by Jordan curves having a Dini continuous curvature. With the aid of the concept of compact operators and the Fredholm alternative, we are able to show that the harmonic Faber operator is a topological isomorphism. Since, in particular, the main result of the third chapter holds true for closures K of domains bounded by analytic Jordan curves, we can make use of it to obtain new results concerning the approximation of functions being continuous on K and harmonic in the interior of K by harmonic polynomials. To do so, we develop techniques applied by L. Frerick and J. Müller in [11] and adjust them to our setting. So, we can transfer results about the classic Faber operator to the harmonic Faber operator. In the last chapter, we will use the theory of harmonic Faber polynomials
to solve certain Dirichlet problems in the complex plane. We pursue
two different approaches: First, with a similar philosophy as in [50],
we develop a procedure to compute the coefficients of a series \sum_{\nu=-\infty}^{\infty}c_{\nu}F_{\nu} converging uniformly to the solution of a given Dirichlet problem. Later, we will point out how semi-infinite programming with harmonic Faber polynomials as ansatz functions can be used to get an approximate solution of a given Dirichlet problem. We cover both approaches first from a theoretical point of view before we have a focus on the numerical implementation of concrete examples. As application of the numerical computations, we considerably obtain visualisations of the concerned Dirichlet problems rounding out our discussion about the harmonic Faber polynomials and the harmonic Faber operator.
COVID-19 was a harsh reminder that diseases are an aspect of human existence and mortality. It was also a live experiment in the formation and alteration of disease-related attitudes. Not only are these attitudes relevant to an individual’s self-protective behavior, but they also seem to be associated with social and political attitudes more broadly. One of these attitudes is Social Darwinism, which holds that a pandemic benefits society by enabling nature “to weed out the weak”. In two countries (N = 300, N = 533), we introduce and provide evidence for the reliability, validity, and usefulness of the Disease-Related Social Darwinism (DRSD) Short Scale measuring this concept. Results indicate that DRSD is meaningful related to other central political attitudes like Social Dominance Orientation, Authoritarianism and neoliberalism. Importantly, the scale significantly predicted people’s protective behavior during the Pandemic over and above general social Darwinism. Moreover, it significantly predicted conservative attitudes, even after controlling for Social Dominance Orientation.
This study investigates the endemic centres of Indonesian animals and the biodiversity across geographical gradients. At the same time, it also evaluated different lines suggested for separating the Oriental and Australian faunal region in the Indonesian region. The analyses have mainly used the present-day distribution of terrestrial vertebrates, especially the smallest ranges of species and subspecies. The results show that faunal migration of Oriental and Australian lineages to the Indonesian Archipelago may have been happening since the Palaeocene period and more importantly, island drifts might have facilitated such migration. These events caused major reorganisation of island positions and island forms, which in turn resulted in faunal extinction around the mid-Pliocene. Some islands, especially in the Wallacea region, emerged very late and as a result nowadays they are lacking endemic forms. There are currently at least seven endemic centres, which can be recognised, i.e. Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, North Moluccas, New Guinea and the Lesser Sundas/Banda Arcs. The affinities between these endemic centres revealed that there are two clusters of islands in the Indonesian Archipelago. These different clusters suggest in turn the shifts of biogeographical lines in the Indonesian Archipelago. Furthermore, oscillation in climate, eustatic sea level changes and fluctuations in vegetation in the Quaternary period had much affected the distribution pattern of animals. There was a phase of expansion for montane oak forests, grasslands and woodlands during the period 18,000-14,000 years ago in East Indonesia and 16,500-12,000 years ago in West Indonesia. Such an expansion led to the increased isolation of rainforests and of the faunas adapted to them. These periods are also indicated by the lowering of the tree line which facilitated montane fauna to disperse across lower elevations. At 8,000-9,000 years ago, the climate became warmer and slightly wetter. The mid- to upper montane forests expanded to their full altitudinal range, while montane oak forest, grassland, and woodland areas had contracted. The oscillation in climate, eustatic sea level changes and fluctuations in vegetation in turn determines much the formation of numerous sub endemic centres, which today can be found within the mainland. Recently, there are 14 sub endemic centres on Borneo, 8 on Java, 16 on Sumatra, 14 on Sulawesi and 14 on New Guinea. From the conservation management point of view, the identification of such sub endemic centres would generate valuable information for the protection effort.
The distractor-response binding effect (Frings & Rothermund, 2011; Frings, Rothermund, & Wentura, 2007; Rothermund, Wentura, & De Houwer, 2005) is based on the idea that irrelevant information will be integrated with the response to the relevant stimuli in an episodic memory trace. The immediate re-encounter of any aspect of this saved episode " be it relevant or irrelevant " can lead to retrieval of the whole episode. As a consequence, the previously executed and now retrieved response may influencing the response to the current relevant stimulus. That is, the current response may either be facilitated or be impaired by the retrieved response, depending on whether it is compatible or incompatible to the currently demanded response. Previous research on this kind of episodic retrieval focused on the influence on action control. I examined if distractor response binding also plays a role in decision making in addition to action control. To this end I adapted the distractor-to-distractor priming paradigm (Frings et al., 2007) and conducted nine experiments in which participants had to decide as fast as possible which disease a fictional patient suffered from. To infer the correct diagnosis, two cues were presented; one did not give any hint for a disease (the irrelevant cue), whereas the other did (the relevant cue). Experiments 1a to 1c showed that the distractor-response binding effect is present in deterministic decision situations. Further, experiments 2a and 2b indicate that distractor-response binding also influences decisions under uncertainty. Finally, experiments 3a to 3d were conducted to test some constraints and underlying mechanisms of the distractor-response binding effect in decision making under uncertainty. In sum, these nine experiments provide strong evidence that distractor-response binding influences decision making.
Soil and water conservation are cross-sectional assignments. The respective objectives of the individual interest groups cause conflicts of use and lead to different assessments of the soil's potential. Necessary decisions and the practical implementation of soil and water conservation measures require the use of data. These data, which are both spatial and temporal, characterise past, present and, in the case of predictions, also future environmental conditions. The multitude of relevant data necessitates the use of geographic information systems as an instrument for successful resource management. With the use of problem-oriented case studies, it was possible to show that an improved understanding of the system is necessary for both optimisation of the site-specific resource management within the framework of Precision Farming and for the assessment of local to regional conflicts of use with regard to land usage and soil and water conservation. By changing the method, sufficient respective measures regarding documentation, prevention and risk assessment were able to be introduced and implemented. With the objective of practical implementation of a sustainable resource management, the possibilities of short- to long-term initiation of self-organised systems through the networking of available (geo-)information as well as the respective interest groups involved in the conflict of use formed the focal point of this investigation. The creation of networks linking agriculture, water extractors and nature conservation promotes necessary synergies and emergences, due to increased communication. Not the conveyance of knowledge alone, but rather new forms of understanding cause the interest groups involved to change their behaviour, thus facilitating efficient resource management for the interests of soil and water conservation.
The equity premium (Mehra and Prescott, 1985) is still a puzzle in the sense that there are still no convincing explanations for the size of the equity premium. In this dissertation, we study this long-standing puzzle and several possible behavioral explanations. First, we apply the IRR methodology proposed by Fama and French (1999) to achieve large firm level data on the equity premia for N = 28,256 companies in 54 countries around the world. Second, by using preferences data from the INTRA study (Rieger et. al., 2014), we could test the relevant risk factors together with time cognition to explain the equity premium. We document the failure of the Myopic Loss Aversion hypothesis by Benartzi and Thaler (1995) but provides rigorous empirical evidence to support the behavioral theory of ambiguity aversion to account for the equity premium. The observations shed some light on the new approach of integrating risk and ambiguity (together with time preferences) into a more general model of uncertainty, in which both risk premium and ambiguity premium play roles in asset pricing models.
The formerly communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe (transitional economies in Europe and the Soviet Union – for example, East Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Russia) and transitional economies in Asia – for example, China, Vietnam had centrally planned economies, which did not allow entrepreneurship activities. Despite the political-socioeconomic transformations in transitional economies around 1989, they still had an institutional heritage that affects individuals’ values and attitudes, which, in turn, influence intentions, behaviors, and actions, including entrepreneurship.
While prior studies on the long-lasting effects of socialist legacy on entrepreneurship have focused on limited geographical regions (e.g., East-West Germany, and East-West Europe), this dissertation focuses on the Vietnamese context, which offers a unique quasi-experimental setting. In 1954, Vietnam was divided into the socialist North and the non-socialist South, and it was then reunified under socialist rule in 1975. Thus, the intensity of differences in socialist treatment in North-South Vietnam (about 21 years) is much shorter than that in East-West Germany (about 40 years) and East-West Europe (about 70 years when considering former Soviet Union countries).
To assess the relationship between socialist history and entrepreneurship in this unique setting, we survey more than 3,000 Vietnamese individuals. This thesis finds that individuals from North Vietnam have lower entrepreneurship intentions, are less likely to enroll in entrepreneurship education programs, and display lower likelihood to take over an existing business, compared to those from the South of Vietnam. The long-lasting effect of formerly socialist institutions on entrepreneurship is apparently deeper than previously discovered in the prominent case of East-West Germany and East-West Europe as well.
In the second empirical investigation, this dissertation focuses on how succession intentions differ from others (e.g., founding, and employee intentions) regarding career choice motivation, and the effect of three main elements of the theory of planned behavior (e.g., entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) in transition economy – Vietnam context. The findings of this thesis suggest that an intentional founder is labeled with innovation, an intentional successor is labeled with roles motivation, and an intentional employee is labeled with social mission. Additionally, this thesis reveals that entrepreneurial attitude and perceived behavioral control are positively associated with the founding intention, whereas there is no difference in this effect between succession and employee intentions.
Jahrhunderts hatten.
