The main purpose of this dissertation is to solve the following question: How will the emergence of the Euro influence the currency composition of the NICs?monetary reserves? Taiwan and Thailand are chosen as our investigation subjects. There are two sorts of motives for central banks' reserve holdings, i.e., intervention-related motives and portfolio-related motives. The need for reserve holdings resulting from intervention-related motives are justified because of the costs resulting from exchange rate instability. On the other hand, we use the Tobin-Markowitz model to justify the need for monetary reserves held for portfolio-related motives. The operational implication of this distinction is the separation of monetary reserves into two tranches corresponding to different objectives. An analysis of a central bank's transaction balance is a money quality analysis. Such an analysis has to do with transaction costs and non-pecuniary rates of return. The facts point out, that the Euro's emergence will not change the fact that the USD will continue to be the major currency of transaction balances of the central banks in Taiwan and Thailand. In order to answer the question about diversification of monetary reserves as idle balance in the two NICs, we carry out an analysis of the portfolio approach, which is based on the basic ideas of the Tobin-Markowitz model. This analysis shows that Taiwan and/or Thailand respectively cannot reduce risk at a given rate of return or increase the rate of return at a given risk by diversifying their monetary reserves as idle balance from the USD to the Euro.
An indignation control training has been developed and tested for it's effectiveness. The training was based upon a cognitive model of emotions. One's own cognitions in emotional situations are often considered to be "assertorically" true. Therefore it was tested, whether the emotion could be controlled by means of reflecting about one's own assertoric judgements and considering alternative interpretations of the current situation. The cognitive training was compared in terms of effectiveness to a relaxation training. Participants were randomly distributed to the experimental conditions: cognitive training, relaxation training and control group. Six training sessions à 90 min. - one per week- were conducted. Pre- post and follow-up-test after 3 month were undertaken. As dependent variables the following measures were used: Participants reported a personal indignation encounter and indicated their reactions to imaginal situations. Additionally a real provocation was realised. The data analysis was based upon a group of 72 persons. The cognitive training proved to be more effective in reducing indignation compared to the control group. Especially for behavioural measures the cognitive training was also superior compared to the relaxation approach. Taken together for the cognitive training group indignation in the own situation as well as in imaginal situations was reduced. Also perspective taking could be improved as well as destructive reactions in imaginal situations were reduced. After the real provocation less physiological arousal was reported as well as less negative reactions observed. Almost all effects remained stable over the 3 month follow-up period. The results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method. This new approach is also relevant for psychological interventions: A more precise control of emotion is possible because the training is based upon the specific cognitive components of the emotion. As a consequence, clients on their own are able to question their interpretation of a situation based upon each single cognition.

(2001)
Between 1933 and 1945 the right to asylum did not exist. The decisive factor for a successful escape from the National Socialism was finding a country offering refuge. Although Canada had a long history of immigration from German-speaking regions to look back on, it generally kept its doors closed to these refugees. This thesis focuses on the German-speaking refugees who did find refuge in Canada; some Jews, about 1000 Social Democrats from the Sudetenland and those refugees deported from Britain in 1940. Annette Puckhaber addresses the question of the circumstances under which they came and settled in Canada. Three biographical accounts illustrate the experience of the flight from a subjective viewpoint. As a contrast, the author discusses the reasons for the Canadian immigration policies which led to the admittance of the refugees: They extend from economical considerations to protection of its international reputation. In summary, for the refugees, acceptance into the country was a matter of survival. The government in Ottawa however considered immigration to Canada - regardless of its circumstances - as a privilege in itself: a privilege extended to the few.
Mothers and Daughters: The Female English Bildungsroman, 1811-1915 This dissertation analyses the mother-daughter-relationship of five female apprenticeship novels. In the course of the study of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (1811), Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847), Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters (1865), George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss (1860) and Virginia Woolf's The Voyage Out (1915) modern feminist, psychological, and psychoanalytical theories concerning the mother-daughter-conflict and female development are considered as well as autobio-graphic material and the authoresses' Œuvres. The historical context, the social and psychohistoric con-ditions, and changes in England during the 19th and beginning 20th century (especially concerning family, female socialisation and role training, motherhood, children's education) are studied and the features and achievements of the female Bildungsroman, that experiences an upswing during this time, emphasized. The dissertation shows the development of the female apprenticeship novel concerning its presentation of mother, daughter, and mother-daughter-relationship and also the enormous progressive-ness of this genre concerning the description of details of this relationship. The analysis demonstrates that all novels show complex and problematic mother-daughter-relationships, that for the daughters are on the one hand traumatic, but on the other hand lead to self-discovery and autonomy. The texts present the mother-daughter-relationship as highly ambivalent, oscillating between love, identification, aggression, rejection, rivalry, and rebellion. In this way they serve to correct the female doctrine and the ideological mother image of the Victorian period as much as the cliché of childhood as an idyllic condition without conflicts, and thus anticipate psychological discoveries and efforts of later periods. Furthermore, it becomes obvious that the authoresses put their own problematic mother-daughter-relationship into literary form and thus try to overcome it; that the fictitious mother-daughter-relation-ships often have a compensatory function. The fact that the analysed novels admit to the mother-daughter-relationship so early such an importance, constitutes their rank and justifies their place in the English literature and culture.
In this thesis we focus on the development and investigation of methods for the computation of confluent hypergeometric functions. We point out the relations between these functions and parabolic boundary value problems and demonstrate applications to models of heat transfer and fluid dynamics. For the computation of confluent hypergeometric functions on compact (real or complex) intervals we consider a series expansion based on the Hadamard product of power series. It turnes out that the partial sums of this expansion are easily computable and provide a better rate of convergence in comparison to the partial sums of the Taylor series. Regarding the computational accuracy the problem of cancellation errors is reduced considerably. Another important tool for the computation of confluent hypergeometric functions are recurrence formulae. Although easy to implement, such recurrence relations are numerically unstable e.g. due to rounding errors. In order to circumvent these problems a method for computing recurrence relations in backward direction is applied. Furthermore, asymptotic expansions for large arguments in modulus are considered. From the numerical point of view the determination of the number of terms used for the approximation is a crucial point. As an application we consider initial-boundary value problems with partial differential equations of parabolic type, where we use the method of eigenfunction expansion in order to determine an explicit form of the solution. In this case the arising eigenfunctions depend directly on the geometry of the considered domain. For certain domains with some special geometry the eigenfunctions are of confluent hypergeometric type. Both a conductive heat transfer model and an application in fluid dynamics is considered. Finally, the application of several heat transfer models to certain sterilization processes in food industry is discussed.
