Globalization and Divergence: Dynamics of Dissensus in Non-Dominant Cinema Cultures of South India
(2002)
Based on her field studies between 1999 and 2003 in the South Indian State Kerala, the author critically reflects about Habermas's concept of the (bourgeois) public sphere, and also about later critiques of Habermas (eg. Eley). Schulze adds the new dimensions of human emotionality and humane ethics to the discussion of today's public (spheres) and civil societies which are part of globalising modernisations. It is poor and marginalized women's strongly felt compassion and love practised in their daily lives, which Schulze focusses on: these Marginalized ethics of the 'Good life' do sharply contrast the dominant societies' value systems; these latters consequently don't provide to the Marginaliezed a 'model'. However, Kerala, which is widely refered to as a development model - particularly with respect to the situation/ education of its women - is thus analysed by the author as a historically and culturally specific kind of 'modernity', which follows are rather violent and aggressive path of development in consonance with the general ruling anti-human/ nature philosophy of 'globalization'. Schulze's tool in her field work is 'participatory action research' and also her 'empathic camera' (camcoder). She mixed with local women who had organized themselves in women's groups with the urge to truly represent themSelves and their own ethics and goals in life - without the usual intervention of men/ of nationalist politics ruling Kerala's public sphere(s). In the course of Schulze and the local women groups becoming acquainted with each other, the scholar and the Marginalized felt the desire to support each other in their respective struggles for empowerment and for being respected as a human being. The author finally understood the fallacy and cynicism which lies in applying as a scholar the term 'women in Kerala' as if there wasn't the day to day particular violence which women of dalit ('untouchable'), or of adivasi (indigenous) background experience. Women's lives are moulded by networks of violence which are inherent to Kerala's castes, classes, and ethnicities, parallel to the basic oppression which women face because they are women. A group of dalit women in Kerala became particularly close companions in Schulze's quest for unravelling seemingly contradictory facts: Kerala's official claim to provide to women and other persons who were generally discriminated against in the larger Indian context, a supportive social and educational environment, on the one hand, and on the other hand the comparatively high number of suicides among Keralite women (and men), and the absence of women in what appears as Kerala's public sphere and 'civil society'. In several analytical steps which always centre around the experiences and feelings of the many poor and marginalized women, their life-worlds, their daily life philosophies, their views, voices, their ethics, dreams, Schulze unfolds these Marginalized visions, and tries to interpret them on their own terms. In this manner not only the mainstream society's propaganda about the 'Kerala development model' is demystified, but also to the reader insights become possible into a totally different set of ethics held by these women. They transgress notions of competition, of the 'necessary' monetarisation of all spheres of human life and of nature, of caste, religious, or gender conflicts. By means of 13 small video films the women together with Schulze showed and reflected upon their philosophy of an empowered 'Good life'.
In light of the severe air pollution in Trier, restrictions of motorized traffic and the associated personal willingness to do so are absolutely essential. Yet before an effective model of intervention can be developed, the following questions must be addressed from an analytical and conditional perspective: Which motives underlie the willingness of the citizens of Trier to reduce their personal automobile use or to participate actively in a political way with respect to traffic? Do they do this because of their own responsibility-related and justice-related beliefs or from purely rational and self-interest oriented calculations? The results of a questionnaire study (N = 369) could show that the postulate of the rational choice theory is not tenable with the dominance of the self-interest motive. Instead, there is a pluralism of motives based on responsibility, justice, and self-interest related cognitions and emotions that form the basis of the willingness to act with respect to traffic. The interviewees in Trier are, above all, willing to actively speak up in favor of local political measures for reducing traffic when they regard these measures as fair; are outraged about the low commitment of other citizens, but also expect personal benefits from such measures. In the first place, specific internal and external control beliefs are relevant for the reduction of personal automobile use. Other important influential factors here also include outrage over the low commitment of others and the expectation of personal benefits. The results of this study allow specific starting points to be derived for developing interventions aimed at the reduction of the amount of traffic in Trier. Moreover, important from the practical point of view of intervention, general lifestyle analyses identified seven lifestyle clusters which make it possible to design intervention programs specifically for the target groups, thus allowing intervention programs to be organized more effectively.
(2002)
Hamanns knight tombs - Reception and transformation of a French type The thesis deals with an important group of tombs in the history of medieval art. The object of research is a particular group of figurative tombs for nobles from Marburg, Cappenberg, Bielefeld and Münstereifel. These tombs were brought to art historians attention by Richard Hamann in the year 1929. For the first time the research at hand considers the tombs as particularly instructive examples thus strengthening the basis for medieval studies. They also explain the function of memorial sculpture in medieval history. Interdisciplinary approaches of medieval studies are combined with critical valuation of historical research as well as fundamental research and the interpretation of sources. The up-to-date unpublished sources from the starting point for the specific research of the tombs. Biographic-genealogical aspects, actual church law, the historical-social context and the memorial purpose are the research areas from which the meaning of tombs was elaborated, as well as taking into consideration the medieval mentality about death and memory. The results of the research give a new valuation of these tombs, which form a key position regarding the spectrum of their statement for the development of art history and memorial history in the 14th century. The tombs reveal contact between artist and patron. They help to find out more about social circumstances intertwined with medieval art comissions. These memorials prove the existence of artistic grave specialists in the western German region of the 14th century, who were recommendet in turn by the closely related noble familiy. On a social-cultural level these memorials show the importance of royal French art as a distinctive model further more expressing the need for oneself to express social status by the means of art. These memorials are closely related to certain people. They are crucial to the research of medieval memorial sculpture. The memorial from Cappenberg is a paradigm for the shift from a cult ideology to a pure economic ideology thus showing proof of patroned memorials. Whereas the tombs in Marburg, Bielefeld and Münstereifel are keyworks showing the relevance of spontaneous and private memorial of the dead.
Changes in the cardiovascular system are an often described state in eating disorders. Women with anorexia and bulimia nervosa and control persons were studied before and after a treatment in a psychosomatic clinic. Using different methods cardiovascular reactivity was evaluated in rest and during mental stress and exercise. Improvements after treatment were defined by weight gain, an increase of the trijodthyroninlevel and no more purging in the last three weeks. The anorectics showed higher epinephrinlevels than the other women. The cardiovascular parameters demonstrated an increase of parasympathic activity and a decrease of sympathetic activity in eating disorders. However, the reactivities on stressors showed no differences in comparison to the control group. No changes were observed during the treatment apart from the heartrate, which showed a tendency to increase in the last week of therapy. Because the improvements during the therapy were generally small, within the present study it could not be clarified wether the observed alterations are reversible. An increase of the parasympathic activity in autonome regulation of the heart in eating disorders has been demonstrated and the reactivity on stressors appears to be normal.
Since the end of the British Empire, which had provided white Australians with points of view, attitudes and stereotypes of the world - including perceptions of their own role in it -, rediscovering an international identity has been an Australian quest. Many turned to European roots; others to the Aboriginal landscape; Blanche d"Alpuget and Christopher J. Koch are two who have ventured into Asia for the culturally and spiritually regenerative materials necessary to redefine Australia in the post-colonial world. They have taken Eastern concepts of "self", and "soul" and forged them with the Australian obsession of fear and desire of contact with the "other" in a looking-glass of hybrid, Austral-Asian myth to reveal the true soul of Australian identity. Along with a brief historical and literary background to the triangular relationship between white Australia, Asia, and the West, this study- goal is to identify some of the Southeast Asian symbols, myths and literary structures which Koch and d"Alpuget integrate into the Western tradition. Central elements include: dichotomies as of personality, righteousness, and virtue; the "Otherworld", where one may approach enlightenment, but at the risk of falling into self-delusion; archetypes of the Hindu divine feminine; Eastern roots of Koch- themes of the "double man"; concepts of the forces of "light" and "dark"; the semiotics of time and meaning; and the central Eastern metaphor of the mirror by which Australia creates interdependent images of itself and of Asia.
