Cognitive performance is contingent upon multiple factors. Beyond the impact of en-vironmental circumstances, the bodily state may hinder or promote cognitive processing. Af-ferent transmission from the viscera, for instance, is crucial not only for the genesis of affect and emotion, but further exerts significant influences on memory and attention. In particular, afferent cardiovascular feedback from baroreceptors demonstrated subcortical and cortical inhibition. Consequences for human cognition and behavior are the impairment of simple perception and sensorimotor functioning. Four studies are presented that investigate the mod-ulatory impact of baro-afferent feedback on selective attention. The first study demonstrates that the modulation of sensory processing by baroreceptor activity applies to the processing of complex stimulus configurations. By the use of a visual masking task in which a target had to be selected against a visual mask, perceptual interference was reduced when target and mask were presented during the ventricular systole compared to the diastole. In study two, selection efficiency was systematically manipulated in a visual selection task in which a target letter was flanked by distracting stimuli. By comparing participants" performance under homogene-ous and heterogeneous stimulus conditions, selection efficiency was assessed as a function of the cardiac cycle phase in which the targets and distractors were presented. The susceptibility of selection performance to the stimulus condition at hand was less pronounced during the ventricular systole compared to the diastole. Study one and two therefore indicate that inter-ference from irrelevant sensory input, resulting from temporally overlapping processing traces or from the simultaneous presentation of distractor stimuli, is reduced during phases of in-creased baro-afferent feedback. Study three experimentally manipulated baroreceptor activity by systematically varying the participant- body position while a sequential distractor priming task was completed. In this study, negative priming and distractor-response binding effects were obtained as indices of controlled and automatic distractor processing, respectively. It was found that only controlled distractor processing was affected by tonic increases in baro-receptor activity. In line with study one and two these results indicate that controlled selection processes are more efficient during enhanced baro-afferent feedback, observable in dimin-ished aftereffects of controlled distractor processing. Due to previous findings that indicated baro-afferent transmission to affect central, rather than response-related processing stages, study four measured lateralized-readiness potentials (LRPs) and reaction times (RTs), while participants, again, had to selectively respond to target stimuli that were surrounded by dis-tractors. The impact of distractor inhibition on stimulus-related, but not on response-related LRPs suggests that in a sequential distractor priming task, the sensory representations of dis-tractors, rather than motor responses are targeted by inhibition. Together with the results from studies one through three and the finding of baroreceptor-mediated behavioral inhibition tar-geting central processing stages, study four corroborates the presumption of baro-afferent signal transmission to modulate controlled processes involved in selective attention. In sum, the work presented shows that visual selective attention benefits from in-creased baro-afferent feedback as its effects are not confined to simple perception, but may facilitate the active suppression of neural activity related to sensory input from distractors. Hence, due to noise reduction, baroreceptor-mediated inhibition may promote effective selec-tion in vision.
In recent decades, the Arctic has been undergoing a wide range of fast environmental changes. The sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean not only reacts rapidly to these changes, but also influences and alters the physical properties of the atmospheric boundary layer and the underlying ocean on various scales. In that regard, polynyas, i.e. regions of open water and thin ice within thernclosed pack ice, play a key role as being regions of enhanced atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions and extensive new ice formation during winter. A precise long-term monitoring and increased efforts to employ long-term and high-resolution satellite data is therefore of high interest for the polar scientific community. The retrieval of thin-ice thickness (TIT) fields from thermal infrared satellite data and atmospheric reanalysis, utilizing a one-dimensional energy balance model, allows for the estimation of the heat loss to the atmosphere and hence, ice-production rates. However, an extended application of this approach is inherently connected with severe challenges that originate predominantly from the disturbing influence of clouds and necessary simplifications in the model set-up, which all need to be carefully considered and compensated for. The presented thesis addresses these challenges and demonstrates the applicability of thermal infrared TIT distributions for a long-term polynya monitoring, as well as an accurate estimation of ice production in Arctic polynyas at a relatively high spatial resolution. Being written in a cumulative style, the thesis is subdivided into three parts that show the consequent evolution and improvement of the TIT retrieval, based on two regional studies (Storfjorden and North Water (NOW) polynya) and a final large-scale, pan-Arctic study. The first study on the Storfjorden polynya, situated in the Svalbard archipelago, represents the first long-term investigation on spatial and temporal polynya characteristics that is solely based on daily TIT fields derived from MODIS thermal infrared satellite data and ECMWF ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalysis data. Typical quantities such as polynya area (POLA), the TIT distribution, frequencies of polynya events as well as the total ice production are derived and compared to previous remote sensing and modeling studies. The study includes a first basic approach that aims for a compensation of cloud-induced gaps in daily TIT composites. This coverage-correction (CC) is a mathematically simple upscaling procedure that depends solely on the daily percentage of available MODIS coverage and yields daily POLA with an error-margin of 5 to 6 %. The NOW polynya in northern Baffin Bay is the main focus region of the second study, which follows two main goals. First, a new statistics-based cloud interpolation scheme (Spatial Feature Reconstruction - SFR) as well as additional cloud-screening procedures are successfully adapted and implemented in the TIT retrieval for usage in Arctic polynya regions. For a 13-yr period, results on polynya characteristics are compared to the CC approach. Furthermore, an investigation on highly variable ice-bridge dynamics in Nares Strait is presented. Second, an analysis of decadal changes of the NOW polynya is carried out, as the additional use of a suite of passive microwave sensors leads to an extended record of 37 consecutive winter seasons, thereby enabling detailed inter-sensor comparisons. In the final study, the SFR-interpolated daily TIT composites are used to infer spatial and temporal characteristics of 17 circumpolar polynya regions in the Arctic for 2002/2003 to 2014/2015. All polynya regions combined cover an average thin-ice area of 226.6 -± 36.1 x 10-³ km-² during winter (November to March) and yield an average total wintertime accumulated ice production of about 1811 -± 293 km-³. Regional differences in derived ice production trends are noticeable. The Laptev Sea on the Siberian shelf is presented as a focus region, as frequently appearing polynyas along the fast-ice edge promote high rates of new ice production. New affirming results on a distinct relation to sea-ice area export rates and hence, the Transpolar Drift, are shown. This new high-resolution pan-Arctic data set can be further utilized and build upon in a variety of atmospheric and oceanographic applications, while still offering room for further improvements such as incorporating high-resolution atmospheric data sets and an optimized lead-detection.
A model-based temperature adjustment scheme for wintertime sea-ice production retrievals from MODIS
(2022)
Knowledge of the wintertime sea-ice production in Arctic polynyas is an important requirement for estimations of the dense water formation, which drives vertical mixing in the upper ocean. Satellite-based techniques incorporating relatively high resolution thermal-infrared data from MODIS in combination with atmospheric reanalysis data have proven to be a strong tool to monitor large and regularly forming polynyas and to resolve narrow thin-ice areas (i.e., leads) along the shelf-breaks and across the entire Arctic Ocean. However, the selection of the atmospheric data sets has a large influence on derived polynya characteristics due to their impact on the calculation of the heat loss to the atmosphere, which is determined by the local thin-ice thickness. In order to overcome this methodical ambiguity, we present a MODIS-assisted temperature adjustment (MATA) algorithm that yields corrections of the 2 m air temperature and hence decreases differences between the atmospheric input data sets. The adjustment algorithm is based on atmospheric model simulations. We focus on the Laptev Sea region for detailed case studies on the developed algorithm and present time series of polynya characteristics in the winter season 2019/2020. It shows that the application of the empirically derived correction decreases the difference between different utilized atmospheric products significantly from 49% to 23%. Additional filter strategies are applied that aim at increasing the capability to include leads in the quasi-daily and persistence-filtered thin-ice thickness composites. More generally, the winter of 2019/2020 features high polynya activity in the eastern Arctic and less activity in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, presumably as a result of the particularly strong polar vortex in early 2020.
Imagery-based techniques have received increasing interest in psychotherapy research. Whereas their effectiveness has been shown for various psychological disorders, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Current research predominantly investigates intrapersonal processes, while interpersonal processes have received no attention to date. The aim of the current dissertation was to fill this lacuna. The three interrelated studies comprising this dissertation were the first to examine the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques in the treatment of test anxiety, relate physiological arousal to emotional processing, and investigate the association between physiological synchrony and multiple process measures.
Study I investigated the feasibility of a newly developed protocol, which integrates imagery-based and cognitive-behavioral components, to treat test anxiety in a sample of 31 students. The results indicated the protocol as acceptable, feasible, and effective in the treatment of test anxiety. Additionally, the imagery-based component was positively associated with therapeutic bond, session evaluation, and emotional experience.
Study II shifted the focus from the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques to client-therapist physiological synchrony as a putative mechanism of change in the same sample. The results suggested that physiological synchrony was greater than chance during both imagery-based and cognitive-behavioral components. Variability of physiological synchrony on the session-level during the imagery-based components and variability on both levels (session and dyad) during the cognitive-behavioral components were demonstrated. Furthermore, physiological synchrony of the imagery-based segments was positively assocatied with therapeutic bond. No association was found for the cognitive-behavioral components.
Study III examined both intrapersonal (i.e., clients’ electrodermal activity) and interpersonal (i.e., client-therapist electrodermal activity synchrony) processes and their associations with emotional processing in a sample of 49 client-therapist-dyads. The results suggested that higher client physiological arousal and a moderate level of physiological synchrony were associated with deeper emotional processing.
Taken together, the results highlight the effectiveness of imagery-based techniques in the treatment of test anxiety. Furthermore, the results of Studies II and III support the idea of physiological synchrony as a mechanism of change in imagery with and without rescripting. The current dissertation takes an important step towards optimizing process research within psychotherapy and contributes to a better understanding of the potency and mechanisms of change of imagery-based techniques. We hope that these studies’ implications will support everyday clinical practice.
There is considerable evidence for an association between chronic dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, atrophy of the hippocampus (HC) and cognitive and mood changes in clinical populations and in aging. The present thesis investigated this relationship in young healthy male subjects. Special emphasis was put on measures of HC volume and function derived from structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Higher cortisol levels after awakening were observed in subjects with higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Larger HC volume was associated with higher cortisol levels after awakening and in response to acute stress, whereas cognitive performance was impaired in subjects with larger HC volumes. Hippocampal activation during picture encoding was reduced after stress induction, and positive associations between activation and cognitive performance before stress were not present anymore afterwards. The present findings underscore the importance of structural and functional brain imaging for psychoneuroendocrinological research. The investigation of the association between cortisol levels and hippocampal integrity in young healthy subjects elicited unexpected results and adds to the understanding of HPA dysfunction and HC atrophy in clinical and aged populations.

Between 1933 and 1945 the right to asylum did not exist. The decisive factor for a successful escape from the National Socialism was finding a country offering refuge. Although Canada had a long history of immigration from German-speaking regions to look back on, it generally kept its doors closed to these refugees. This thesis focuses on the German-speaking refugees who did find refuge in Canada; some Jews, about 1000 Social Democrats from the Sudetenland and those refugees deported from Britain in 1940. Annette Puckhaber addresses the question of the circumstances under which they came and settled in Canada. Three biographical accounts illustrate the experience of the flight from a subjective viewpoint. As a contrast, the author discusses the reasons for the Canadian immigration policies which led to the admittance of the refugees: They extend from economical considerations to protection of its international reputation. In summary, for the refugees, acceptance into the country was a matter of survival. The government in Ottawa however considered immigration to Canada - regardless of its circumstances - as a privilege in itself: a privilege extended to the few.
The catechol-O-methyltransferase gene (COMT) plays a crucial role in the metabolism of catecholamines in the frontal cortex. A single nucleotide polymorphism (Val158Met SNP, rs4680) leads to either methionine (Met) or valine (Val) at codon 158, resulting in a three- to fourfold reduction in COMT activity. The aim of the present study was to assess the COMT Val158Met SNP as a risk factor for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ADHD symptom severity and co-morbid conduct disorder (CD) in 166 children with ADHD. The main finding of the present study is that the Met allele of the COMT Val158Met SNP was associated with ADHD and increased ADHD symptom severity. No association with co-morbid CD was observed. In addition, ADHD symptom severity and early adverse familial environment were positive predictors of lifetime CD. These findings support previous results implicating COMT in ADHD symptom severity and early adverse familial environment as risk factors for co-morbid CD, emphasizing the need for early intervention to prevent aggressive and maladaptive behavior progressing into CD, reducing the overall severity of the disease burden in children with ADHD.
The present work explores how theories of motivation can be used to enhance video game research. Currently, Flow-Theory and Self-Determination Theory are the most common approaches in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The dissertation provides an in-depth look into Motive Disposition Theory and how to utilize it to explain interindividual differences in motivation. Different players have different preferences and make different choices when playing games, and not every player experiences the same outcomes when playing the same game. I provide a short overview of the current state of the research on motivation to play video games. Next, Motive Disposition Theory is applied in the context of digital games in four different research papers, featuring seven studies, totaling 1197 participants. The constructs of explicit and implicit motives are explained in detail while focusing on the two social motives (i.e., affiliation and power). As dependent variables, behaviour, preferences, choices, and experiences are used in different game environments (i.e., Minecraft, League of Legends, and Pokémon). The four papers are followed by a general discussion about the seven studies and Motive Disposition Theory in general. Finally, a short overview is provided about other theories of motivation and how they could be used to further our understanding of the motivation to play digital games in the future. This thesis proposes that 1) Motive Disposition Theory represents a valuable approach to understand individual motivations within the context of digital games; 2) there is a variety of motivational theories that can and should be utilized by researchers in the field of Human-Computer Interaction to broaden the currently one-sided perspective on human motivation; 3) researchers should aim to align their choice of motivational theory with their research goals by choosing the theory that best describes the phenomenon in question and by carefully adjusting each study design to the theoretical assumptions of that theory.
A sustainable development of forests and their ecosystem services requires the monitoring of the forests" state and changes as well as the prediction of their future development. To achieve the latter, eco-physiological forest growth models are usually applied. These models require calibration and validation with forestry reference data. This data includes forest structural parameters such as tree height or stem diameter which are easy to measure and can be used to estimate the core model parameters, i.e. the tree- biomass pools. The methods traditionally applied to derive the structural parameters are mainly manual and time-consuming. Hence, the in situ data acquisition is inefficient and limited in its ability to capture the vertical and horizontal variability in stand structure. Ground-based remote sensing bears the potential to overcome the limitations of the traditional methods. As they can be automated, ground-based remote sensing methods allow a much more efficient data acquisition and a larger spatial coverage. They are also able to capture forest structure in its three dimensions. Nevertheless, at present further research is required, in particular with respect to the practical integration of ground-based remote sensing data into forest growth models as well as regarding factors influencing the structural parameter retrieval from this data. Therefore, the goal of this PhD thesis was to investigate the influencing factors of two ground-based remote sensing methods (terrestrial laser scanning and hemispherical photography), which have not or only scarcely been studied to date. In addition, the use of forest structural parameters derived from these methods for the calibration of a forest growth model was assessed. Both goals were achieved. The results of this thesis could contribute significantly to a comprehensive assessment of ground-based remote sensing and its potential to derive the forest structural parameters. However, the use of these methods to calibrate forest growth models proved to be limited. An optimized data sampling design is expected to eliminate the major limitations, though. Furthermore, the combination of ground-based, airborne, and satellite remote sensing sensors was suggested to provide an optimized framework for the general integration of remotely sensed data into forest growth models. This combination of remote sensing observations at different scales will contribute greatly to a modern forest management with the purpose of warranting a sustainable forest development even under growing economic and ecological pressures.

Allocating scarce resources efficiently is a major task in mechanism design. One of the most fundamental problems in mechanism design theory is the problem of selling a single indivisible item to bidders with private valuations for the item. In this setting, the classic Vickrey auction of~\citet{vickrey1961} describes a simple mechanism to implement a social welfare maximizing allocation.
The Vickrey auction for a single item asks every buyer to report its valuation and allocates the item to the highest bidder for a price of the second highest bid. This auction features some desirable properties, e.g., buyers cannot benefit from misreporting their true value for the item (incentive compatibility) and the auction can be executed in polynomial time.
However, when there is more than one item for sale and buyers' valuations for sets of items are not additive or the set of feasible allocations is constrained, then constructing mechanisms that implement efficient allocations and have polynomial runtime might be very challenging. Consider a single seller selling $n\in \N$ heterogeneous indivisible items to several bidders. The Vickrey-Clarke-Groves auction generalizes the idea of the Vickrey auction to this multi-item setting. Naturally, every bidder has an intrinsic value for every subset of items. As in in the Vickrey auction, bidders report their valuations (Now, for every subset of items!). Then, the auctioneer computes a social welfare maximizing allocation according to the submitted bids and charges buyers the social cost of their winning that is incurred by the rest of the buyers. (This is the analogue to charging the second highest bid to the winning bidder in the single item Vickrey auction.) It turns out that the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves auction is also incentive compatible but it poses some problems: In fact, say for $n=40$, bidders would have to submit $2^{40}-1$ values (one value for each nonempty subset of the ground set) in total. Thus, asking every bidder for its valuation might be impossible due to time complexity issues. Therefore, even though the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves auction implements a social welfare maximizing allocation in this multi-item setting it might be impractical and there is need for alternative approaches to implement social welfare maximizing allocations.
This dissertation represents the results of three independent research papers all of them tackling the problem of implementing efficient allocations in different combinatorial settings.
The implicit power motive is one of the most researched motives in motivational psychology—at least in adults. Children have rarely been subject to investigation and there are virtually no results on behavioral and affective correlates of the implicit power motive in children. As behavior and affect are important components of conceptual validation, the empirical data in this dissertation focused on identifying three correlates, namely resource control behavior (study 1), power stress (study 2), and persuasive behavior (study 3). In each study, the implicit power motive was measured via the Picture Story Exercise, using an adapted version for children. Children across samples were between 4 and 11 years old.
Results from study 1 and 2 showed that children’s power-related behavior corresponded with evidence from adult samples: children with a high implicit power motive secure attractive resources and show negative reactions to a thwarted attempt to exert influence. Study 3 contradicted existing evidence with adults in that children’s persuasive behavior was not associated with nonverbal, but with verbal strategies of persuasion. Despite this inconsistency, these results are, together with the validation of a child-friendly Picture Story Exercise version, an important step into further investigating and confirming the concept of the implicit power motive and how to measure it in children.
